As much as sports decision-makers might want to look away from the obvious inconsistency, betting has almost always been, and likely always will be, a part of the culture. The problem becomes when the money spent on games and matches might directly influence the outcome of those affairs. In terms of Maria Sharapova, she no longer participates in professional tennis matches.
She is still a popular figure in tennis and has always been a fantastic businessperson. She has recently become one of the faces of Polymarket's involvement in her sport, and a publicity photo of her shows her presumably sitting in the stands, looking at a scoreboard, and trying to bet on what happens next.
That is a problem. Not with Sharapova herself necessarily, though. She is trying to make a living, and one can assume Polymarket paid her well for the ad.

The issue is that betting on sports keeps fans distracted from tennis, specifically, in terms of point-by-point, and means those placing bets on Polymarket are more worried about how much money they will make than about the love of the game.
Is that Polymarket's fault? Nope. It's ours, or, at least, those fans more invested in making money than in who will play the next point beautifully, win the next point, and then the next game, and before one knows it, the entire tournament.
The issue is money over passion, which is also slightly cringy in that one is making money off of another person's wins or losses, and therefore emotional ups and downs, rather than just being human. Tennis is the ultimate sport for drama. Games can change quickly, and matches do too. The emotions are included along with the passion.

What makes Polymarket's involvement with tennis even more awkward is that players could technically bet on themselves before and during a match. The International Tennis Integrity Agency might suspend a player who does that, but that would be ironic, as Polymarket has recently partnered with the ATP Tour to become its official prediction market provider.
That presumably doesn't happen unless the ATP is getting kickbacks from Polymarket for the endorsement, so how can the ruling body of men's tennis have an issue with a player taking advantage of the system? It can't.
Betting site Kalshi was also involved recently, but that was only officially at the US Open. That is a big enough event, of course, but not the entire tour. Yet.
Some might chastise Maria Sharapova's involvement with Polymarket and her lack of self-awareness of how it could affect her former sport, but she also shouldn't have to turn away from a money-making venture. What makes more sense is the ATP and US Open not agreeing to deals with betting sites that could literally affect the outcomes of matches and, therefore, the integrity of the sport.
